An east-west commute, run twice a day into low sun
I-94 crosses Cass County almost due east and west. A Mapleton commute therefore points at the sunrise on the way to work and at the sunset on the way home, and in spring and fall the sun sits low enough to land straight in the windshield for the whole run. There is nothing between here and the West Fargo exits to interrupt it. No hills, no tree line, no buildings taller than a grain leg. In winter you get the same sun a second time as it reflects off snow-covered field on both shoulders, arriving from below where a visor does no work at all.
The numbers for a North Dakota registration are fixed. At least 35% VLT on every window other than the windshield, front doors, rear doors and back glass alike, with no darker allowance for the rear. The windshield must be at least 70% VLT, and non-reflective film is permitted above the AS-1 line. That is NDCC 39-21-39 as changed by HB 1340, effective August 1, 2025.
The AS-1 strip is the part worth asking about here, since low sun in the eyes is a Mapleton-specific problem and a strip is aimed exactly at it. Below the line, a 35% floor takes darkness off the table as a heat strategy, which leaves film construction as the only remaining lever on infrared.
