Ceramic coating is a liquid that chemically bonds to your clear coat and cures into a hard, glass-like layer on top of it. Once it has cured you cannot wipe it off or wash it away. It has become part of the surface. What you get is a deep, wet-looking gloss and a slick finish that water, road film and bug residue struggle to hold onto.
Two limits are worth stating before you read any further. A coating will not stop a rock chip. It is extremely hard but it is also extremely thin, and gravel at highway speed goes straight through it into the paint. That job belongs to paint protection film. A coating also will not improve paint that already has swirls in it. It preserves the condition it finds. Everything past those two points — and there is a lot of it — is upside, and in this climate the upside is considerable.

Every coating job starts with the paint rather than the bottle. A coating locks in the surface it finds, so we assess the condition first and walk you through what correction would and wouldn't change. That conversation happens before you book, because it determines most of the cost and all of the result.
A typical ceramic coating service includes:
- Full decontamination wash and iron fallout removal to strip grime, brake dust and road film
- Clay bar or chemical decontamination until the surface is completely smooth
- Paint correction as needed to reduce swirls, light scratches and oxidation before anything gets sealed in
- Panel wipe with a dedicated prep solvent so no polishing oils remain between the coating and the paint

Ceramic coating vs. wax in a North Dakota climate
Wax has been the default for decades because it is cheap, familiar and gives paint a genuinely nice shine. The problem here is duration. A coat of wax typically holds for a few weeks before UV, washing and weather break it down, which means keeping a car protected through a full Fargo year turns into a reapplication schedule most people abandon by August. Ceramic coating works differently. Instead of resting on top of the clear coat, it bonds to it and cures into a hard layer built to last years.
That gap shows up hardest in the two seasons that punish a finish. Summer here delivers more UV than people expect this far north, and unprotected paint oxidizes and flattens under it. Winter flips the problem: brine, sand and chemical de-icers land on every panel, and that grime wants to bond to your paint the same way it bonds to everything else on the road. A coated panel resists that bonding, so the film rinses away rather than etching in, and you spend less time at the wash bay with cold hands.
What a coating does not do is replace washing. Salt and grit still land on the surface and still need to come off, and a coated car still wants proper technique and pH-neutral soap. Automatic brush washes will still put swirls in the coating, and harsh detergents will shorten its life. What changes is the effort each wash takes and how much of the underlying gloss survives the year. That is the trade, honestly stated: real protection and much easier maintenance, in exchange for prep work up front and a wash routine you still have to keep.

Will ceramic coating stop rock chips or scratches?
No. Ceramic coating is a hard but very thin layer bonded to your clear coat, so it protects against UV, chemical staining and oxidation without adding meaningful impact resistance. If rock chips are the concern, paint protection film is the right product. Plenty of owners do both, with film on the impact panels and coating over the top of it. Film is the impact layer, coating is the finish layer.
How long does a ceramic coating actually last?
It varies by the coating system, how the vehicle is stored and how it's washed. Properly applied coatings are built in terms of years rather than the weeks you get from wax. We offer several options at different durability levels and we'll walk through what's realistic for your vehicle and your driving before you pick one.
Do I still need to wash my car after it's coated?
Yes. Coating makes washing easier and less frequent, it doesn't replace it. Road salt, sand and grime still land on the surface, and rinsing them off regularly is what keeps the coating performing. Skipping washes entirely will shorten its life.
Is paint correction always required before coating?
Not always, but the paint needs to be inspected first. A coating seals in whatever condition it finds, so existing swirls and oxidation get locked under gloss for years. On a new or near-new vehicle a light single-stage enhancement is often all that's warranted, and sometimes nothing at all. On a swirl-heavy trade-in it's the majority of the work.
