What a summer of interstate miles bakes onto a front end
Mapleton is about eleven miles west of Fargo and the way in and out is I-94, through the diamond interchange at exit 338. That exit road is 163rd Avenue SE. Follow it south of the interstate and you reach Maple River Golf Club, eighteen holes laid along the bends of the Maple River on ground that was a farmstead until 1965. River bottom, watered turf, still June evenings. Insects hatch there in volume. At neighborhood speed most of them go around a car. At interstate speed nothing goes around anything.
Bug residue is protein and acid, and it does its real damage after the drive rather than during it. A dark hood parked in July sun runs well above air temperature, which cooks the residue down into a crust that bonds to clear coat and starts etching it within days. The pattern is always the same: bumper cover, the leading foot of hood, mirror faces, and the bottom third of the windshield where the wipers turn it into a smear. Come September the load changes to combine dust off the section-road fields, which gets pulled through the cowl and packs the cabin filter.
None of that comes off with pressure. It comes off with the right chemistry and enough dwell time, followed by a decontamination step, with glass done last so the film does not come straight back.
