What window tint is legal in North Dakota?
North Dakota runs one number for every window except the windshield: at least 35% VLT. Front doors, back doors, rear glass, all the same. There is no darker allowance for the back, which is the part that catches people out. That floor is new. HB 1340 took effect August 1, 2025 and replaced the old 50% limit with 35%, so film that was over the line two years ago sits inside the current limit. The windshield is separate. It has to stay at 70% VLT or higher, and non-reflective film is allowed above the AS-1 line, or in the top five inches where the glass carries no AS-1 marking. Minnesota is a different rulebook: 50% VLT on side and rear windows, with a 3% tolerance. We sit on the border, so this comes up most weeks. What governs your car is the state it is registered in, and the plate is the first thing we ask about. We install to whatever limit applies to that registration. What an officer or an inspection station does with it after that is out of our hands, and any shop telling you otherwise is selling you something. Figures verified against NDCC 39-21-39 and Minn.
